Hadestown has officially opened at Melbourne’s iconic Her Majesty’s Theatre on Saturday May 10th 2025, and audiences painted the town, wearing broaches and coaches, roses and pins, all red and ready to celebrate a brilliant night at the theatre.
Starring much loved Australian performer Christine Anu playing the role of Hermes, Noah Mullins as Orpheus, and Abigail Adriano as Eurydice, Hadestown has taken the world by storm and now it’s Melbourne’s turn.
Originating as Anaïs Mitchell’s indie theatre project, along with her artistic collaborator, Rachel Chavkin, Hadestown was transformed into a genre-defying musical that blends modern American folk music with New Orleans-inspired jazz.
If you haven’t listened to the full soundtrack yet, you can find it on all music streaming platforms, or watch an Australian cast recording of notably one of the more renown numbers in the musical ‘WAY DOWN HADESTOWN‘ on YouTube here:
Alongside Christine Anu, Noah Mullins, and Abigail Adriano, are Elenoa Rokobaro as Persephone, and Adrian Tamburini as Hades, with Fates; Sarah Murr, Jennifer Trijo, and Imani Williams. The company is completed with members Eliza Soriano, Afua Adjei, Sam Richardson, Iosefa Laga’aia, Devon Braithwaite, Molly Bugeja, Jessie Monk, Jack Lyall, and Joshua Kobeck. The band is led by Musical Director Laura Tipoki, with Shane Lestideau, Oliver Powell, Lauren Jennings, Kieran Rafferty, Griffin Youngs, and Ash Griffin completing the Melbourne team.
Noah Mullins’ career comes directly from a successful tour of Rent with LPD Productions, playing the role of Mark, where Noah’s guitar playing skills most certainly affected casting’s decision to entrust the role of Orpheus on this talented artist. Noah’s rendition of ‘PROMISES’ is tragically beautiful, and sets the tone for what is a truly heartfelt and encapsulating relationship between Orpheus and Eurydice we see develop throughout the show.
